Our yorkie, Sergeant, has always been a picky eater. We thought the daily throwing up, paw chewing, and itchy skin was just a breed characteristic and a normal part of living in the country. When he was 8 years old we came home from a movie and he was VERY sick. I mean, gross sick. We found him in our room, motionless laying in throw up and poop. We thought he was dead.
He finally heard us and raised his head a bit, but he clearly wasn't feeling well. We took him to the vet and they kept him for a week trying to keep him alive. They succeeded but Sergeant came home with new diet restrictions. We quickly found out the diet he had been on was way too high in fat and that his little system couldn't handle his old diet.
We switched him off fatty dog treats, table scraps, and regular adult dog food to grain free treats, veggies, and Science Diet Sensitive Stomach - Small Bites. I am telling you, I'll swear by Science Diet. He stopped throwing up, he doesn't have the itchies, and he hasn't spent anymore time in the hospital with tummy issues.
I am not a scientist or a doctor, so please consult your veterinarian before switching your dog's food.
I am just sharing some tips from experience that can help you explore options for your pet if he/she is having tummy issues. :)
Surprisingly, some of Sergeant's other physical ailments (like back pain) lessened also when we changed his diet.
Some of the veggies both my dogs love that are DOGGY FRIENDLY are:
bell peppers
carrots
cabbage
broccoli
cauliflower
zucchini
We hand out veggies sparingly and always check with the internet or a professional before giving our pets the same food we eat. The dogs think they want everything so it's our responsibility as pet owners to do our research before sharing food. Make sure you steer clear from potatoes, onions, garlic, chocolate, raisins, and grapes as these things are poisonous to dogs (as are other items, but these are the things we regularly have in our house).
If you're looking for solutions to help your dog live a healthier life, I hope these ideas inspire you. Before making any big changes, please consult your veterinarian and transition your pet slowly to new food items. We love our pets dearly and do our best to provide the best possible life for them.
And Cheerios!!! We were such bad dog parents. Lol. Live and learn. I’m glad he’s healthy now.
I remember a time when we fed him pop-tarts. What were we thinking?!
