Restful Work

Unless you're a kid living at your parents' house with no responsibilities, I bet you find it hard to rest in your adult life. Trying to rest while knowing an endless list of "to-do's" awaits you doesn't feel like rest. It feels like stress. Sitting around the house and watching TV all day while chores pile up around you doesn't feel rejuvenating...it just feels lazy. So if God is calling you to a time of rest, then how can you fulfill that call?

Over the last several years, I've been exploring rest and trying new things. The only thing I've found that works for me is to restfully work. Yep...restful work. I have a full time job, a home, a small farm, a church, and an amazing husband that I am blessed to spend time with. So when God calls me to a time of rest, I've found it hard to just ignore all my responsibilities and find rest. I can't just pause my life, sit around (do nothing), and FEEL rested. Honestly, it just feels like a waste of time and like extra work later.

When God calls you to rest in a chaotic time of life, pursuing work and chores in a restful state is the only way to find true rest. A restful state comes from spending intentional time with Jesus. Intentional time with Jesus involves mindfulness.

If God has called you to rest, then approach each task as if you are on a mission from God. When I'm resting and I walk by a pile of laundry, if my attitude is sour then I walk away from it. In that moment, I turn on worship music, open my Bible, or start praying for God to change my heart. I re-approach the task and if I feel peace and gratitude in my heart, THEN I do the chore. Out of a place of rest, I am working to get things done.

If you're wanting to try this, be mindful of your state of mind, ask Jesus what he wants you to do, and restfully check items off your agenda. If in your time with Jesus he tells you to lay something down, then lay it down and see what he wants you to do next.

Don't push to meet your own agenda; push to meet Jesus' agenda.

In the times that Jesus wants you to hustle and get work done, GET WORK DONE, son. But if he's calling you to rest, then be mindful of how he wants you to do it and be obedient to what he wants for your life.

I hope God is speaking to you through my words and experiences. I'm praying for you as you read this to hear wisdom and truth that acts as a guiding light in your life.
